The Staff Bioinformatics Scientist will help drive bioinformatics projects related to the design of highly multiplexed molecular diagnostics through all stages of planning, design, computational verification and empirical validation in collaboration with experimental scientists and other team members. The BDRD within NMRC facilitates biological defense research including not only rapid detection of infectious diseases of global importance and the... enhancement of global disease surveillance for early pathogen detection and response, but also new approaches in medical countermeasures, such as advancing phage therapy to treat multidrug resistant bacterial infections. The Bioinformatics Engineer plays an important role in the quality control, assembly, annotation, and dissemination of microbial (bacterial and viral) genomes, metagenomes, transcriptomes and metatranscriptomes in a military medical research setting. The Bioinformatics Engineer collaborates with a team of bioinformatics analysts, computational biologists, and infectious disease experts to manipulate and query high-throughput genetic data to answer complex biological questions in a fast-paced environment. This involves installation and testing of open source bioinformatic software as well as working with a team to create new pipelines, workflows, and standards for customized solutions. Primary Responsibilities The ideal candidate shall: Manipulate and process raw sequencing data from in-house Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms (MiSeq, NextSeq500, NovaSeq6000, PacBio, MinION), microarrays, publicly accessible databases, and/or external collaborators. Assist staff scientists in summarizing research data, preparing posters, and/or presenting results via conference presentations, scientific publications, or project reports. Attend internal meetings and teleconferences as well as external meetings with collaborators and stakeholders when deemed appropriate. Contribute to technical reports, presentations and manuscripts for publication. Assist with appropriate training of other personnel. Work is to be performed on a government installation. The normal work week is Monday - Friday 0900 to 1730; regular telework one or more days a week may be possible after an initial acclimation period, dependent on the mission space and supervisor approval. Candidates may need to work evenings and weekends on very rare occasions. 10% travel, including OCONUS, may be required. A Senior Research Associate 3 position is available immediately in the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resources, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami. The successful candidate will provide up to date bioinformatics and molecular informatics data analysis and expertise for clinical, laboratory and epidemiological studies. This analysis includes but is not limited to: gene expression analysis for bulk/single-cell transcriptome profiling and/or gene regulatory network building, metagenomics, microRNA target analysis, variant calling, genome or transcriptome assembly from next generation sequencing data, and its visualization, SNP functionality analysis. This position will collaborate with Cancer Center investigators on experimental design and subsequent high dimensional data analysis of gene expression, genomics and/or proteomics studies. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Support the Division of Biostatistics of the Shared Resources Core on bioinformatics data analysis for cancer-related research. This includes implementing best-practice bioinformatics pipelines, developing database for genomic studies, preprocessing and analyzing high-throughput data generated from laboratory, publicly available cancer genomic data to support studies initiated by investigators in the Cancer Center. 2. Collaborates with Cancer Center members in planning and analyzing data from laboratory-based and epidemiologic investigations. 3. Collaborates with Cancer Center members in developing cancer-related grant proposals. Carries out corresponding data analysis. 4. Interacts with internal contacts such as principal investigator, research project team, clinicians and data processing and management staff to provide the statistical and bioinformatics input required in the design, conduct and analysis of scientific research studies. 5. Collaborates with Cancer Center members on writing manuscripts or publication, and in preparing abstracts and poster for scientific presentation. 6.
